The Importance of Being an Idol
See that was a whole twist on the Oarsis tune the importance of being IDLE, a twist on the Oscar Wilde tune the importance of being an AMERICAN IDOL. Or something like that.
Reasons why? I saw my favorite band in the world today, in a sense. You see, I haven't had a life shattering favorite band since my Oasis days back when I wasn't an angsty teen, but moreso a furiously optimistic one who thought someday, SOMEDAY things (read: loneliness) would get better - thanks mostly to Noel Gallagher's in general soary -ness in songwriting. I'm still like that I think, I like vast expanses, though they scare me a bit.
But enough about me, in an abstract kind of way.
Today I went to the CMJ filmfest screening of Oasis tour movie "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" and all in all, I felt good. I got tired of Oasis in college, after my high school obsessive binge, and even missed out on their last tour, SACRILEGE to wide eyed 17 yr old Angela, who got to the Roseland Ballroom five hours before showtime so I could have a spot (and manage to get all band members to autograph my 7 inch copy of the Hindu Times). So I left the house casually. Made it all the way uptown to Lincoln Center where a severe looking woman said I better rush down to the theater to make sure I got a seat. Okay. Hopped a cab (abnormal adult behavior, those fools are expensive!) had a nice chat with my cab driver (after last nights guy fuckin' jerked me around when I wanted to take the Manhattan bridge, OBVS a shorter route from the LES), and showed up with around a half hour to spare, and a line already around the block.
CMJ lines i hear are notoriously deceptive, so I wasn't sure I'd make it in, but still didn't really mind if I didn't make it in. I felt fiddy /fiddy right then. I hung out with a boy named Pedro from Michigan and we talked about O WAY SIIIIISS (you have no idea of the extent of this high school love). It was a small theater, and the film was actually really well done. Black and white, no director doing interviews or trying to assert a storyline, just the boys and literally thousands of fans. Great moment was when they played Let There Be Love over the footage at Manchester (find this tune - choon in oasis speak). Also great was when Noel's miraculous popmatic Trouble win. Popomatic trouble. I bet you didn't realize how much you missed it too.
Afterwards, Noel was there to answer questions from the audience. My knee jerk reaction was wanting to slug this one girl who asked "The first time I heard Wonderwall on the radio in San Diego in 1997. I knew I'd always remember that moment forever. What is a similar moment when you knew a song would change your life forever?' Normally snarky Noel said very sincerely that the night he wrote Live Forever, he realized that his life, especially as a songwriter, would be changed from that moment on.
Dear blog friends, if you only got into Oasis through Wonderwall, and missed out on the first album, Definitely Maybe, missing out on Live Forever, look it up and please report back to me. You might get to see what 17 yr old Angela, and to an extent 22 yr old Angela was/ is all about. For True on that one.
Also, they were giving away Tiger Asics at the end. I walked away with a free pair of very badass sneaks that fit pretty well. Is good, no?
